LIMPOPO POLICEWOMAN IN COURT AFTER RAPE VIDEO GOES VIRAL
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed to The South African that the policewoman is being investigated over the child sex video in which she instructs the boy while recording him.
“That was a very disturbing video, and IPID has assigned its investigators to follow up on the matter so that we can institute our own investigation,” said IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.
The policewoman appeared before the Marble Magistate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday, 23 January, charged with raping a minor, sexual grooming of a child and creating and distributing child pornography. She was remanded in custody until 30 January, when she is expected to make a formal bail application.
The 40-year-old woman was arrested on Friday, 20 January, after the Limpopo police commissioner ordered the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to immediately probe the video.
“Internal Police processes have already kicked in following her arrest and will run parallel with the criminal investigation that has been taken over by the IPID,” said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
The woman’s identity cannot be revealed as it would compromise the identity and safety of the victim. The child has been taken to a place of safety where he will receive psychological treatment and assistance.
“The actions of this woman are deplorable and deserve harsh condemnation. Even though the suspect allegedly committed this crime when she was still Public Service Act employee of the SAPS, she should have known better that such unbecoming behaviour deserved harsh consequences. The South African Police Service does not have the space for such people who tarnish its image,” said Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe.
The South African contacted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for comment, which will be added if received.
