After enjoying some time out at a pub with his wife, a man returned home to Culcheth to find his house was being burglarized. In addition, the attackers got more than they bargained for when the victim fought back by knifing both of them. On Friday, February 12th, Patrick Jones, one of the perpetrators, was sentenced to 57 months in prison for his role in the burglary. The pair left their Warrington Road house around 6:30 p.m. on March 1, 2019, according to testimony in Liverpool Crown Court.

Two hours later, they returned to the residence and found two masked intruders inside; the husband retrieved a knife from the kitchen and awaited his attackers at the base of the stairs. After running downstairs and lunging at the masked intruders, he stabbed one of them. The second attacker, who had come and was swinging an unknown instrument at the victim, had the blade thrust into his right arm. Despite the fact that Jones' DNA was found on the knife, the homeowner was never charged.

Jones, whose blood was found on the key safe following the break-in, denies taking a replica gun along with the keys. The 'professional burglar' was freed from a lengthy prison sentence in November 2018, and at the time he committed both of these crimes, he was on probation.

Jones, who appeared in court via video link from HMP Preston after admitting to two counts of burglary, has a total of 20 convictions for 71 offenses, including an astounding 34 burglaries, six of which were directed at residences. After committing a "carefully planned and extremely sophisticated" burglary at a business site in Wiltshire in the summer of 2020, he was sentenced to an additional two years in prison, to be served consecutively.
After leading police on a high-speed automobile pursuit across Cheshire in an attempt to apprehend him for this burglary, the suspect managed to get away and go on the run for over two years before finally being caught. This just pushes out his original release date of February 2023 by a short amount of time. Judge David Swinnerton remarked of the defendant before sentencing,
